Oral surgery refers to procedures addressing issues of the mouth and jaw that require intensive solutions. Rather than getting nonsurgical treatments like medications, physical therapy, or oral devices for your issue, oral surgery gets to the root of the problem using a surgical technique, which is often minimally invasive. At Smyl Manatee, Dr. Patel offers oral surgery in-house with options for anesthesia and sedation. While he doesn’t offer general anesthesia, sedation and local anesthesia together can keep you comfortable and calm during the procedure.
One of the most common oral surgeries is called a root canal. Root canals treat infected or inflamed teeth. Inside of every tooth is soft tissue consisting of nerves and blood vessels. This is called the pulp, and Dr. Patel removes it after creating an opening in the biting surface of the tooth. Dr. Patel then thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth to eliminate lingering bacteria before filling it with a biocompatible material and sealing it with dental adhesive. Finally, he places a custom crown over the tooth to fully restore its original function.
Other options for surgery include dental implant placement, gum grafting, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) surgeries, and tooth extractions.
