Sedation Dentistry

Roughly 75% of people in the United States have at least a little anxiety regarding going to the dentist, and around 9-15% of them avoid dentistry altogether because of that anxiety. At Smyl Manatee in Bradenton, Florida, dentists Nish Patel, DDS, and Chuck Laun, DDS, provide dental services with sedation to keep you calm and relaxed. To find out if sedation dentistry is right for you, call Smyl Manatee or schedule an appointment online today.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an option that can make any dental procedure easier and more relaxing. Fear or anxiety about going to the dentist is more common than you might think, and sedation dentistry helps people get the treatments they need with less discomfort and anxiety.

You can undergo most of the treatments available at Smyl Manatee using sedation under Dr. Patel’s close supervision. Sedation dentistry involves safe dosages of medications that help you relax and ease your mind. The options for sedation at Smyl Manatee let you stay awake during the procedure, but you’ll feel drowsy and probably won’t remember all the details at the end.

During a consultation for sedation dentistry at Smyl Manatee, Dr. Patel explains your options and chooses one based on the extent of dental work you need and your reasons for getting sedation.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

There are many reasons why you might want to consider sedation for your next general, cosmetic, or restorative procedure at Smyl Manatee. You can talk to Dr. Patel about whether it’s a good fit for you, but generally, you can benefit from sedation dentistry if you:

  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Don’t get numb easily with local anesthesia
  • Have highly sensitive teeth
  • Dislike needles and shots
  • Need multiple dental treatments during the same visit
  • Avoid dental treatment because of fear or anxiety

Sedation helps you relax without putting you into a deep sleep like general anesthesia. Most options for sedation wear off quickly once your visit is over, so you don’t need to worry about a long, drawn-out recovery. Inhaled minimal sedation is light enough that you can drive yourself home after your appointment.

How should I prepare for sedation dentistry?

During your consultation for any dental treatment with sedation, Dr. Patel reviews the restrictions and things to keep in mind before your appointment. There are a few extra steps you’ll need to take to prepare for sedation dentistry, including:

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Avoid sedatives for 24 hours
  • Avoid caffeine and other stimulants for 12 hours before and after your appointment
  • Avoid smoking for 12 hours before and after your appointment
  • Stop eating and drinking the night before your appointment
  • Arrange a ride to the office (depending on the type of sedation)

You can expect a few mild side effects with dental sedation, such as dry mouth or hiccups. Fortunately, you might not even remember them once the medication’s effects wear off.

If you have anxiety about going to the dentist or physical discomfort, call Smyl Manatee to learn about your options for sedation dentistry or schedule an appointment online today.

I had Invisalign done with Dr. Patel, and it was a perfect experience from beginning to end. HE is a perfectionist and was attentive and professional from the initial consultation through to post-treatment. I've had orthodontic work done before and it can be a confusing and daunting process, but Dr. Patel provided confident and reassuring guidance the whole way.

I personally did not like going to a dentist until I met Dr. Nish. Smyl Manatee makes you feel welcome the second you walk in the door the entire staff is friendly. I will continue to tell everyone I know about the regular checkup & cleaning experience I had. Amazing doctor with an amazing team.

I was always scared of going to the dentist with the dental anxiety I had until I visited Smyl Manatee. The doctor told me about sedation dentistry and how the crown & bridge work. From the initial consultation to the final delivery, I was guided thoroughly, and the procedure went smoother than I thought. Highly recommended, if you are looking to improve your smile.

Dr. Patel and his team are amazing! They're professional, considerate, and make you feel at ease. I had an implant done a few years and now returning for two more. As much as I hate dental work, I'm at ease returning to Dr. Patel and his team. After my consultation, I left with a lot of information, answered questions, and excitement to fix my smile again. There's no one I trust more for my dental work!
